Why exercise when living with dementia?

We have a lot to learn about the 100+ forms, causes and types of dementia.  Research has demonstrated that in many cases lifestyle plays a role in prevention of or potentially slowing the rate of decline when dementia is already present.  Exercise is one of the best things you can do to fight back against brain changes and loss of function.

Better Brain Function

Exercise causes nerve growth in parts of the brain that control memory.  Exercise also helps maintain brain size.  Nothing can reverse dementia, but exercise may help slow the disease progression.

Decreased stress and depression

Depression is common in persons living with dementia.  Exercise can be used to treat depression and decrease stress level.

Stronger Muscles and Bones

Muscle is lost and bones weaken as we age.  Exercise helps counteract the effects of aging

Improved Sleep

Sleep quality is often disturbed in persons living with dementia.  Sleep can be improved with exercise.

Improved Heart and Vascular Health

There is a big difference in the blood flow to the brain of a fit versus a sedentary senior.  Good blood flow is important for brain function.

Increased Energy and Endurance

Increased endurance can be achieved through regular exercise, which can improve overall quality of life.

It's not too late to show your strength

Belinda H., Marion, IN

“Being fairly new to this dementia journey I'm learning the importance of exercise, community, and social for my husband.  The POD class delivers all in a caring, nurturing environment.  And as I navigate my role as his caregiver my needs are met as well.  Shawn and her team are amazing."
